Gas regulator is optional for all smooth-bore “Saiga” shotguns. It can be installed instead of plug on gas block. Why do we need this regulator and how it works?
Gas regulator optimizes volume of gases, coming from barrel inside the gas block in the process of firing. With higher powder loads we will get higher combustion gases pressure, with smaller loads – lower pressure. Saiga gas regulator equalizes combustion gases energy inside gas block discharging excessive pressure created by heavy loads. In other words this component provides stable action operation with different loads:
- with light lead and powder loads;
- with standard loads;
- with heavy loads (“demi-magnum”, “magnum”).
If gas pressure is too low action will be fully deactivated.
What issues can be avoided with gas regulator?
Cartridges with light loads cannot provide enough energy required for action operation. In this case Saiga gas regulator will not create any interference for propellant gases and direct all gases to the block to avoid action cycle issue.
But with “demi-magnum” and “magnum” loads bolt blow back is too fast. It creates peening of interacting parts, shortening of gun service life and increased recoil. With heavy loads gas regulator discharges excessive pressure to the atmosphere.
Various gas regulators
Stock or standard option will cost you nothing because it already installed on your gun. It has two positions. But this is not enough for effective shooting with whole range of loads. Manual adjustment required.
Saiga mechanical gas regulator has more adjustment steps and can be manually tweaked by shooter.
Smooth automatic adjustment without shooter input can be provided by automatic gas regulator, but it costly.
It based on spring-loaded valve which discharge excessive gas pressure. If gas pressure is nominal – no discharge.
Gas regulator for Saiga model 12, 410 and 20 shotguns can adjust action operation according to shooting conditions. It has 3 positions.
