Spring designed to fixate hammer (striker) slightly extended from the bolt, at old AK and AKM variants hammer was without spring and had free move. At all modern variants hammer is spring-loaded. To replace spring you will have to field strip carbine, remove bolt and hammer. Assemble in reverse order.
